Kickoff the Weekend

July 16, 2021

With my plans not working out to attend the Big Lynn Lodge Rally with the MSTA crew and after some serious grinding during the week, I was able to cut out a little early from work on Friday afternoon to kickoff the weekend. With the Summer daylight savings it it still light around these parts until about 9PM. I'm not a big night rider (except for the occassional #nightdragon with some of my Florida buds) so it's nice to have that extra daylight. I headed out of Young Harris in the late afternoon with only a general sense of where I was bound.
Something pulled me Northwest and I found my self loafing at the corner of Wayah and Old Murphy at the (newly re-opened) Loafers Glory sucking down a grape soda and watching the mower's go by. Yeah, mowers. About 10 of them running in a pack around the NC backroads mowing down the rights-of-way. This is an important maintenance step for everyone travelling the roads but dammit man they were coming right off of the good part of Wayah. As expected, the road was super dirty from the mowing with not only clippings but dirt and gravel drug onto the road by the large tractors and bushhog decks. Not the end of the world, just had to take her easy. Friday traffic was light, weather was fantastic so I figured I'd run through Deal's Gap.
Heading out of Robbinsville and up the mountain, it naturally started to pour as I got to the gas station (and some much coveted awning space) at the Dragon store. Will watching the pop up pass and topping off, I noticed a Youtuber that I have seen online and said hi. As the rain passed, I ended up pulling out behind him on his GSX-R1K and proceeded to follow for a tow (LOL). In the wet, he was nervous due to aggressive performance tires but the old Connie was planted so there we no problems keeping up. Once the little pop up was passed and we got into the dry sections, it was about 4 or 5 corners before being seriously gapped. I still think he only beat me to the top by 10 or 20 secs (wishful??). Either way, it was a fun run up. Got some pics and a drink at the Overlook and headed back toward Georgia.
A great afternoon on the flawless C-14. She's bone stock and I'm looking forward to putting some good suspenders on her in the next few months, it will help tremendously. The weekend looks to be busy, so no more riding, but boy what a fix I got today!!
